I sort of hesitate to call this a “tutorial”, as if I’m some sort of expert or something. I asked for this French Press for Christmas and have been using it every single day since. I was a Keurig girl, through and through, until I realized how much better I like freshly ground and brewed coffee.
What you’ll need:
– whole coffee beans (and container)
(or you can grind your beans at the grocery store/coffee shop)
– a kettle (or means of boiling water)
– mug, obviously (“Cat Mom” mug here)
Start by heating up your water in your kettle. You want it to be just under boiling.
While your water is heating up, coarse grind your beans. My grinder doesn’t have a setting for how well ground the beans should be, so I just eyeball it. I use enough beans to make 4 cups of coffee (there are hashmarks inside my grinder for 4, 8, 10, and 12 cups, so I go off of that).
Once the water is ready and the coffee grounds are in the french press, I pour just a little bit, maybe 1/2 cup of water, on the grounds and let that sit for about 30 seconds. This lets the coffee “bloom”, which should allow for richer flavor.
After 30 seconds, I slowly pour the rest of the water in, nearly to the top of the press, and let it brew for 4 minutes. If you like stronger coffee, you can use less water. If you like weaker coffee, you can let it brew for a shorter amount of time. I’ve found this combination of beans/brew time to be my favorite, so that’s what I do!
When the 4 minutes is up, slowly press down and pour your coffee! (The press has instructions to stir before pressing down, but I’ve found that there is no difference if I just press down without the stirring). I found this helpful resource, if you need assistance with how much coffee and water to use! Like I said, I make 4 cups worth. I like to have a big cup first thing in the morning, and then reheat the leftovers later in the morning or in the afternoon, if I need a boost! If you don’t use all the coffee on the first pour, make sure to put the rest in another mug. You don’t want to leave your coffee in the press with the grounds, as it will continue to brew and get bitter!
It’s best to use freshly-ground beans, so keep that in mind. If you have a Starbucks Rewards account, you can get reward points for buying their packaged coffee, either in store or at the grocery store! The whole process takes maybe 10 minutes, depending on how quickly the water boils. It’s not quite as convenient as a morning cup of joe from the Keurig, but it sure tastes good!
