Creating An At-Home Oasis

Everybody has their “sanctuary”. That place they can go to escape the stressors of everyday life, relax, unwind, and just be for a little while. I’ve found that the need for having this sort of oasis has become more and more important to me the older that I get. As someone who is prone to working all the time, I’ve made a huge effort in the last year to find more balance in my life and to make time for the things that I want to do, not just the things that I need to do. It’s been freeing and has changed my work-life balance immensely, which contributes to a healthier state of mind and more joy in my life!

My go-to when I need to unplug and fully relax is the bathtub. A long soak in a hot bath can melt away the stress of a bad day and always contributes to a better overall mood. While I would be satisfied in a plain old tub with no frills, it makes me happy to surround my area with things that I love and add to the overall relaxation experience. It’s on our agenda (hopefully soon!) to give our master bathroom a bit of a face-lift, since it’s still very mid-90’s builder-grade chic, so I’ve been slowly dreaming up what I want to do to the space and the decor style I want to introduce to it. Enter: Drew Barrymore’s Flower Home Collection at Walmart. The collection features pieces that are a bit mid-century (which I love), a bit bohemian, with some bright colors and fun textures. As I was browsing the collection, I came across several items that I thought would be great additions to our bathroom and serve as the inspiration for how we want to design the whole space. With each piece that arrived on our doorstep (with free shipping, since my order was over $35!), I was continuously impressed with the quality, especially since the things I picked out are all at a good price point! I love that I can create a calming and eclectic area to unwind at the end of the day with pieces that I know will hold up well!

My philosophy and mindset when I’m going through the process of designing and accessorizing a room is to find pieces that are both functional and stylish, especially the larger items, like furniture. While there are certainly some exceptions, I typically will go for things that can easily transition into another room or area in our home. It’s no secret that I love to change up the decor and styling of a room pretty regularly, so choosing and investing in pieces that can be moved around and serve more than one purpose allows me to be able to change things without having to spend more money! For example, I picked out this ceramic side table to be used as a sort of “landing spot” for things like my phone, a drink, and candles in the bathroom, but it can also easily be used outside on our deck!

While my philosophy for more-than-one-use mostly applies to the furniture or bigger ticket items in our home, that’s certainly a consideration for decor pieces, too. There are some things that I’ll buy knowing that it can really only work in one room or one area of our home, like room-specific art or lighting. Other times, I’ll come across pieces like this mango wood wall shelf and envision endless options for its use! For the next bit of time, it will live right here in our bathroom, housing my bath bombs, body brush, and other things. In the future, I can see it used as a spice rack in a kitchen, as a jewelry or perfume organizer in my closet, as a little catch-all spot in the entryway, or even to hold notepads and desk accessories in my office!

I’ve been able to enjoy this newly-styled corner of our home a few times now and love how it came together. It will look even better once we get a fresh coat of paint on the walls and personalize it even more to our personal style!
