New House Design: The Sitting Room

As you can maybe imagine, I’ve been daydreaming of how I’m hoping to decorate our new home for the last few weeks. As soon as we stepped foot inside the home, I was already picturing where I’d want to put this piece and hang that art. It just felt like home, you know? Mike and I have talked through how we want to layout the house and use each room. I’m thankful to be able to express my creativity in the way I love to, by decorating, without much (if any) push back from him. In our years together, I’ve learned what he likes and how to incorporate that into our home. He’s not very opinionated on this front, but there have certainly been times where he’s requested a more masculine/neutral look for a room, so I’m happy to create that for us! I’m lucky that he likes about 95% of the things that I like, so I have a lot of freedom to just do and know that he will like how it looks. The only time he really likes to get involved (and I definitely want him to be) is when it comes to buying big pieces of furniture, like couches, rugs, etc. I’ll usually find some options and get his thoughts on them. Anything decorative falls on me, which is the most fun part!

So, to the decorating! We’ve got a downstairs study that we’re planning to use as a sitting room/my outfit photo room. Yes, you read that right. I’m actually designing a room in our home that will be used primarily for my mirror outfit photos. What a time to be alive! It’s the reality of my job and something that I need to have set up, so I figured why not create a pretty space that I can easily do that in, which will also function as a quasi-office, reading nook, morning coffee spot?

Here’s what I’m thinking for the design/feel of the space:

Shop the Room: Mirror, Art, Sofa, Rug, Chairs, Table, Tree

The best part is that I already have all of the elements to create this room as soon as we move in. I would love to upgrade some of the items that we have eventually, but I’ll be able to get a room together with a very similar look quickly. One thing that’s on my list for the new house is this stunning floor mirror. I’ve had my eye on this mirror for years, but haven’t wanted to pull the trigger until we’re in a more long-term home. I imagine it weights about 57 million pounds, so I didn’t want to have it continuously moved and potentially damaged or broken. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the next time its on sale and ordering it swiftly!

We’ll put our beloved Article sofa in the room, along with the Ikea version of the tulip table and some velvet chairs I have from Amazon. We’ll need to get some bigger rugs for the larger rooms, like our bedroom and living room, so we can reuse the rugs that are currently in those rooms for these smaller spaces. We have a big canvas art piece in our current dining room that I’m thinking I’ll hang above the couch, too.

While I’m pretty good at envisioning a room in my head, it’s so helpful to me to see it altogether in this form. I can’t wait to get it set up and start using this space!

You know how you just know things sometimes?
What I know is you need to get that mirror ASAP. It is gorgeous, timeless and you will love it forever.
Well worth the investment. And get it before the baby comes because then everything gets turned around and you should have something beautiful and long lasting that will be a piece of you and your husband’s story.
